Mesmerized by a 16-years-old Prodigy

You had probably guessed that I wasn’t a-writter-kinda guy just by looking at how often I make an entry. So, what had inspired to post this time?

This morning when I was driving to work, a friend of mine rang me up asking me to check out a girl from YouTube. He said this girl sings brilliantly and I will never regret for checking it out (my friend knew that I had always had a thing on girls who can sing). Considering I had never concords on his taste for music and the fact that I was driving, I simply amused him.

Anyway, after one whole day of hectic work schedule and a “not-so-intense” workout session, lethargy had collapsed me to my bed the first thing I arrived home. This time, my friend asked me again if I had checked the girl out. Yawning, I told him that I was totally worn off and needed a rest but his never-ending coaxes annoyed me so I finally gave in. Then, I switched on my laptop and searched for the name he mentioned in YouTube.

The first video I watched was her performance on a David Foster show. I was totally blown away right after she sang. Her vocal, the power and her stage charisma boggled my mind. Singing high register with powerful vocals seem like a cinch to her (I wonder if she can whistle). My first impression toward this 17-years-old yet mesmerizing young lady was: "A vocal prodigy”, "Voices with the touch of God”... After watching the first video, I can’t hold myself back from searching more video of her.

Just to share some of the best videos of her, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you 16-years-old’s Charice Pempengco from Philippines.

Charice, One Moment In Time

I think Charice really has the potential to be a bona fide diva in the future. In one of her appearance in The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah was so impressed by Charice that she called on David Foster to make Charice into his newest protégé. Since then Charice has appeared alongside many of today's top stars such as Katharine McPhee, Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, Alicia Keys and Celine Dion.

P/S: I bet that my friend is elating right now since that I had finally agreed with his taste for music….

Some thoughts for the US bailout plan…

clip_image001 Many financial news and magazines are now overwhelmed with the news on latest US Federal Reserve’s creation – a pool of fund which worth $700bn. Apparently, the purpose of this fund is to bailout traumatized financial institutions, which of cause include the world’s largest insurer, American International Group (AIG).

Honestly, ever since I first learned about the Fed’s bailout plan, the mechanism of the bailout is never part of my concern. Yes, I’ve studied some finance and economics and I’ve even attended some management classes… So does it mean that I can just go back to my dusted books and decode the Fed’s plan?

Not only that the plan is “supposedly” to be complex, the plan is too opaque to be deciphered… You see, ever since the plan was revealed, no solid structure on the execution of the plan can be found anywhere… So why bother to think of it when I’ve something else more meaningful to do?

clip_image002 Is sad to imagine how a country which has been seen as a forerunner for free market and market transparency behave in such a way? The reason can only be one… They do not wish the peoples to understand the mechanism and they do not want the analysts to estimate how much the bailout plan will cost the Federal Government and the American economy…

Just to give you a brief picture on the bailout… Bailout is not the Fed giving the bank the required funding. Basically what the Fed does is merely giving the traumatized banks a so called “quality” asset in-exchange for the bank’s toxic-assets. The whole process is like the Fed says: “Ok, take this piece of paper and you can increase your balance sheet value by $80bn!” The whole process might not even involve any transaction or a single cent, just cheap accounting entries!!!

At the end of the day, the bank will have strong balance sheet figure boosted by the so called “quality” assets from the Fed in exchange for the assets which intoxicated the banks. The whole idea of bailout is to slow the deteriorating process of bank’s balance sheets thus taking advantage of the time gap for banks to restructure their finances!

Then you may ask a question like "Fine with the accounting entries… What if the banks really need the money?"

clip_image003The Fed do not always have billion of dollars in reserve to bail the banks out (I doubted they even have the $700bn). In layman term, what the Fed literally meant by the bailout is a promise of an empty sum (is like opening an empty “cheque”). Then you can go to your creditors and tell them you have this “cheque” from the Fed as a backup!

If the banks need to “cash in” the “cheque”, the Fed has no choice but to print the amount of money required (printing money is the Fed’s ultimate authority). However, over printing of money will (or might, I don’t know… there are instances of good bailout plan but in economics, bailout is never good!) cause irreparable damages to the economy…

Let me give you a layman example. Assume that your monthly household income is $1,000 (well, this $1,000 will be used to feed your dad, mum, brother, sister, you and even your dog for a month). Imagine you suck at bet one day (this will be the subprime) and it cost you $700 from the bet. Unfortunately you don’t have the money to pay your opponent, so you run back to your dad asking for help… Your dad now have two options – First, to bail you out and pay the $700 on your behalf or secondly, kick you out of the house and let you and your sibling learn the lesson?

Let me tell you what will happen if your dad chooses to bail you out. Firstly, your dad is disregarding the benefits of the rest of the household… How is your dad going to feed the whole household with just $300?

Secondly, your dad is lucky if you’ve learn a lesson and never bet again… Tell you what; the truth is you will bet again because you know someone is there to back you up. (This is what an economist called a moral hazard!) On top of that, your brother and sister will learn nothing and they will possibly follow your footstep in the future… These are the consequences the father cannot afford to disregard.

clip_image004Now the US Feds is rescuing the traumatized banks in the expense of the taxpayers. Firstly - Printing money will bring the value of dollar down… In layman term, this means what you buy with a dollar before can will now cost you more than a dollar!

Secondly – As the value of dollar slipped, the Government will require more funding to finance its expenditure. In other words, increase in the Federal budget deficit. As a result, they will have to issue more bonds to finance the deficit… Additionally, as the maturity of these debts approach; the US Government will either issue new debts to finance old debts or to increase taxes levied to honor the debts. Either way, is bad for the people!

Thirdly – as the value of dollar plunges, commodity prices shoot up… this will cause inflationary pressure on the economy.

Forth – US financial assets lose value. This will ultimately creep into the investors’ wealth! Accoriding to official estimation, the initiation of the bailout plan will cost each American man, woman and children $2,300.

If you spell everything out, you can have thousand and one implication for the bailout plan…

Ok, I wasn’t planning to write a long story, just penning down my thoughts… Anyway, if the Fed really decide to go for it, we can only hope that the plan is a good one!

The Malaysia 'Kia' Nostalgic (^^)V

I received an interesting e-mail this morning with subject title "When We Were Young". Considering I am in fact, genuinely, really, authentically, bona fide'ly' YOUNG, "We Were Young" doesn't really seems like an e-mail message intended to me. Nonetheless, I read it. ^^

My first impression to the e-mail when I first looked at it was actually nothing more than a few pieces of photos showing kid's stuffs. But interesting enough, those kid's stuffs was the things that I used to bug my mum and dad to buy for me. I bet most of it was no longer on sales in the market.... (Still remember how I used to annoy my parents to spare me few extra cents so that I could get some of these stuffs)

As I scroll down the e-mail, more and more photos appeared right in front of me... "kam kam", "ti ti kei", "power ranger", "ninja turtle".... is all coming back again... these pictures were like film strips - flashing back my childhood nostalgia. The once blurred memories were slowly becoming vivid.

Now I remember now how my grandma cajoled me to go pasar with her early in the morning…

Now I remember how I threatened to not leave my granddad office if he refuses to give me some money…

Now I remember how I was punished by my mum for stealing marbles from a grocery store…

Now I remember how my dad cheers me up with cartoon tapes…

Now I remember…

Now I can remember things which I have long forgotten… How sweet!

To my gong gong and popo, thank you for loving me. Although you were no longer here, you will always have a place in my heart. I will miss you…

Ok, sentimental time is up. For the typical Malaysia "kia", here are some photos to share (courtesy of my dear friend - Enyi). Remember to spare some time out of your busy schedule to evoke your nostalgia… it does feels good (^^)V

Minutes of a meeting 2

Today is Selangor’s public holiday but unfortunate enough for me, I still have to attend a meeting. As I said in my earlier post, I will offer myself to write the minutes of a meeting this time. Thus, I honoured my words.

Although I tried to note down everything (regardless if it is relevant to the agenda) discussed during the meeting, I was still very lost. I couldn't figure out what are M67, M68, I84, and IBS… etc, and because the whole thing was inter-related, I was led astray all along the way.

I have not started on the writing yet, but I don't think that the result will be optimistic.

I keep finding excuses for my failure... Is that true that I am really not fit to handle a simple task like minutes writing or is that because of I wasn’t involved during their previous meetings. Besides, the team which handle this case has been with the client for some time, can it be that because of inexperience with the client and smudged vision of the whole work flow affect my performance? I really don't know! I don't even know that whether I should proceed with the writing or not. I do not want it to end up with another round of disgrace!

Fine, I'll not give in! Perhaps I should spend some humble time with the experienced colleagues for enlightenment. Maybe I can find a way out from there... (They are all busy person, hope that they will be not be irritated by me asking them all sort of questions)

Who is she?

Who is this cute young lady?

She is obviously gorgeous. From her facial appearance you can see that she has a pair of glittering bright eye with curly eyelashes, fair complexion, silky hair... and not to mention her alluring collar bone and aesthetically pleasing 'hour-glass' body.

Yeah, you're probably thinking Asian girls are losing out in term of height. Tell you what, she is 1.78 metre tall and weigh around 57kgs. Perfect? No? (^^)

So, how the hell I know so much about her and seriously, who is she?

Ahem... fine, ladies and gentlemen, this celestial beauty is my GIRL FRIEND!

Please don't get me wrong here; I am not trying to show-off my partner. Just that she had been with me though all my ups and downs for the past seven years (and seriously, I had lot more downs then ups). I just want to find whatever possible way I could to acquaint her importance to me. Hope that she can be there with me for many more seven years to come.

Thank you so much for so many thing that you've given me. You are definitely my blessing from God.

We've just celebrated our seventh year anniversary and I know that we both enjoy our anniversary evening... (Of cause, except for the minor hiccup you had the next day ^^)

You might be very eager to know what happened that night?? heehee... you bet I'll not reveal it... *naughty smile =P*

P/S: She wrote a lot and posted some luscious photos on our anniversary evening. You can visit her blog @ http://doll-me-up-like-a-princess.blogspot.com/

Writing minutes of a meeting

I am not quite a secretary guy and I was asked to write minutes of a meeting today!

Seriously, I really don't understand why my company wanted me to write minutes. They claimed that this is the best way for me to understand the whole project inside out. But honestly, I would rather prefer to do what I was hired to do.

Never mind writing minutes, the feedback i got for my minutes was my sentences were too general and my attention to detail were minimal. Please consider that this was like my second attempt in minutes writing and I wasn’t given any proper instruction on how to do it. To make matter worst, this meeting was like my first out of a dozen meetings they have been having with the client (I guess they probably think I could instantly pick up the whole scenario). So it was a serious OMG case for me... lol!

With all the negative feedback, I bet they wanted to train me more on minutes writing. They even conducted a very educational "lesson" for me and some other new staffs this afternoon on "THE IMPORTANCE OF MINUTES OF A MEETING" and "HOW TO TRANSFORM SPEECHES INTO USEFUL HANDWRITTEN INFOMATION".(I guess their intention to pull in some extra peoples was to disguise the idea of the "lesson" was targeted on me.)

Regardless, I know that their intention was good. Perhaps I was too much of an egotist to accept a simple task like minutes writing. I can't possibly give in; I can't simply let them think that I cannot handle a task like this.

And yes, I will be having another round of meeting tomorrow. Guess what, THIS TIME I’M GONNA OFFER MYSELF TO WRITE THEM A GOOD MINUTES, or at least I will try to write a good one. ^^
